Why Recycle? - The forthcoming WEEE directive is aimed at encouraging reuse and recycling and minimising the negative environmental aspects of disposal. Putting fluorescent tubes into landfill will no longer be an option under the ‘Special Waste Regulations’ and the WEEE directive, which will both come into force next year.
Currently about 60 million tubes per year are sent to landfill.

Recycling has a number of benefits: -
• Minimises health and safety risks to staff
• Improves site housekeeping
• Removes mercury from landfill
• Demonstrates best environmental practice
• Assists ISO 14001 accreditation

Recovers materials which would otherwise be lost>

Material Collection and Handling - Collections can be arranged either via our Website or by telephone or fax. Collection dates will be confirmed within five working days and collections are guaranteed to be carried out within 14 days of a collection request.

• Paperwork will be supplied by SLI at the point of collection.
• Suitable containers for storage and transport are provided free of charge

These range from 4ft – 8 ft containers holding from 20 to 500 tubes
Sodium and other lamps are collected in drums.

Recycling - Tubes are crushed in a revolutionary bulb eater machine. The materials are separated during the crushing process.
Glass is recovered and used in the manufacture of loft insulation.
The mercury powder is distilled to produce pure mercury, which is sold for re-use.
The powder is used for production of concrete.

Collection Infrastructure - SLI presently operate the largest dedicated national fleet of over 60 vehicles, based at 9 regional depots, offering flexibility, reliability and value. Collections are carried out entirely by SLI’s own vehicles and trained personnel. All vehicles are liveried in the company’s colours and logo; all drivers are trained to ADR and carry photographic identity cards. Presently, all vehicles are accessible via mobile phones.

Currently, the fleet includes 6 x 38 tonne curtain sided articulated vehicles and 17 tonne and 7.5 tonne box bodied vehicles with tail lifts.

All drivers are issued with computer generated transfer notes and collection orders, this allows for materials to be logged at the point of collection, directly onto our computerised central system or alternatively on return to the depot. The information will include, collection time and date, confirmation of authorised personnel, details of load and destination.

Security - All SLI sites have either 24hr manned security or 24hr video surveillance with central station activation and alert, supported by Dowshu & TRMC ltd.

All vehicles are fitted with satellite tracking and all vehicles are insured against loss to a value of £15,000 goods in transit cover. All sites are fully insured for loss through fire and accidental damage.
